There was lively discussion at the hustings on 8th April at the Friends Meeting House, with all 6 of the mayoral candidates for York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority offering their views on active travel, in response to questions from the audience. The event was hosted by YCC and York Civic Trust and chaired by Elly Fiorentini from BBC Radio York.
The debate ranged from cycling infrastructure such as designated cycle lanes, to parking charges, to park and ride and potholes. The Conservative candidate, Keane Duncan, claimed he would introduce free parking throughout York and North Yorkshire. The lib dem candidate, Felicity Cunliffe-Lister, said she would support better buses and ensure bus times would coincide with train departure/arrival times. The labour candidate, David Skaith, promised to franchise the bus service (in other words, take it out of private ownership). A number of the candidates, including Kevin Foster, Green Party, promised to support cycle training for school age children.
