Party in Hull Road Park

16 August 11:30am-3pm, Hull Road Park

York Cycle will be at this community event to talk to people about what we do, what we want to see for cycling in York, and talk about our efforts to tackle bike theft. If you can give some time to help chat to people in the park, or just want to say hi to fellow campaigners, come and see us!

Cycle cam workshop

17 August, 6pm, online. This workshop will be led by Tim Wall, chair of the Road Crime Reporters Network and explain how to record and report dangerous driving (eg close passes) by motorists. Tim will cover what video equipment is available, how to edit footage and then submit it to the police portal with a convincing narrative. The workshop will be recorded for members who can’t attend live. Let Leah know to reserve a space. Joining details (on Teams):

News

Heworth roundabout

When Heworth roundabout was resurfaced, the green cycle lanes were removed and replaced by cycle symbol road markings. We’ve had mixed feedback about this, it would be interesting to hear members’ views and experiences on this roundabout. We hope to hold a members’ meeting in October with Cllr Kate Ravilious (Executive member for Transport) who has offered to explain the Council’s thinking on road lines/markings for cyclists.

New-style traffic calming

Credit: YCC member

York has fitted its first sinusoidal hump on North Moor Lane near Huntington primary school. These humps (new to York but not to the world of traffic calming) allow cyclists to maintain speed and generate lower levels of vibration than flat-topped humps. Feedback has been positive so far, and the Council is likely to install more.

Inclusive cycling

A reminder of Get Cycling’s Pathway to Pedals scheme, which can provide loans of cycles (free if you meet certain criteria) appropriate for people with a range of disabilities, and also help organise accessible social rides.

Update: Cycle stands at Co-op

The Bishopthorpe Co-op has re-opened after its refit but the two butterfly-style cycle stands remain. Tim, our local YCC rep, has only had a standard acknowledgement in response to his email requesting more modern stands.

Opportunities and actions

Volunteers needed: Bank Holiday Monday

We’re having a YCC stall on Monday 25 August at Fulford Show (1-5pm, School Lane). We’re looking for members to chat to fellow cyclists about what the Campaign does, encourage them to become members, tell them where they can find us on social media, and how they can get involved our mission to get more safe routes in York. If you can help, please contact us.

And in other news…

Dutch solution to narrow roads

Credit: Andy D’Agorne

An example of how cyclists are so often prioritised in the Netherlands: on this narrow road, the centre line has been removed and cars are forced to share a constricted lane.

E-bike charging in Amsterdam

More Dutch initiatives. Lockers for charging e-bike batteries are set to be introduced in Amsterdam from this autumn. They can also be used just to store a battery rather than leave it vulnerable to thieves when you leave your cycle.

Beware what you wish for: electric cars

A recently-published Norwegian study suggests that the country’s shift from petrol/diesel to electric vehicle ownership has had unintended consequences. By making the switch financially appealing (eg purchase tax exemptions), more people have been taking car trips at the expense of public transport, cycling and walking.
