Member’s Rides: The Grange Cafe

1–2 minutes

The Grange is an unusual cafe in that it is run by Askham Grange prison. Many of the women who work there are prisoners and The Grange (which is also a plant centre) helps inmates learn skills and earn qualifications to reduce reoffending. We’ve cycled past The Grange on many occasions but we finally managed to stop there for lunch on a sunny September Saturday.

We each had a huge sandwich with crisps and a salad garnish and large pots of tea and the total cost (for 2 of us) was a very reasonable £11. The cakes looked spectacular and we’ll have to return at some point to try those.

Why go? Unpretentious, cheap food with a social purpose.

Cycling routes? Askham Richard is a lovely village that can be reached from west York via generally pleasant quiet country roads but there’s little in the way of formal cycle infrastructure so any children need to be confident road riders. We recommend doing a route that takes in pretty villages such as Healaugh and Catterton.
