Corporate Supporter: Grōni

1–2 minutes

Decorating firm Grōni have renewed their support for York Cycle Campaign.

Grōni tells us ‘As a company invested in sustainability, we understand city transportation needs to change. The push for electric vehicles is welcomed, but they don’t solve congestion issues. We want to test using cargo bikes in the city instead. Something which works great in Europe. Tradesmen in the UK are stuck in the old ways of thinking. Our goal is to change that, and motivate others to join. We support any effort to increase cycling as the main means of transport.’

‘We operate using a hybrid system where we bring our cargo bike on top of the van and leave the van parked outside of York, and cycle the rest. This way another diesel van is prevented from entering the city, and green transport is used instead.’

‘We are the first fully sustainable painters & decorators in Yorkshire. We use only non-toxic paints, responsibly sourced paper, we avoid using single-use plastic, plant a tree for every job we take on, and offer a unique zero emission ‘Pedal & Paint’ service, where we cycle to our customers with our custom trailer and an e-cargo bike.’

As a Campaign we think it’s great to have the support from a company who are leading the change using cargo cycles as a low-carbon, low-congestion option to get to jobs.
It’s really proves how versatile cycling can be as a transport option around the city, and that its not limited to the stereotypical uses.

  2. I started in cycle based logistics in 1964, and last owned a car in 1976, when I emigrated from Yorkshire to Scotland
I have memories of the pioneering work by Cyclone Couriers in York many decades ago, and have substantial experience in solving problems in engineering & transport
In 1985 I spent a part of my rather extended job interview with Sustrans, building the ramp at Bishopthorpe onto the old railway formation, before spending 10 years building pavements – mostly in Scotland
Some great team supervisors too – one ran a 7 mile long site, with 60 job creation ‘workers’ on site each day, but just a 12-seater minibus
Some really ‘smart’ solutions that can have up to 200Kg of material hauled to site by bike, using strategic PU-DO hubs for large vehicles to deliver big loads that get distributed by cycle or even collect waste for recycling with local jobs created to consolidate this material rather then wasteful use of 18/26 ton trucks & a crew to collect well under a full load from various places.
Much to develop, especially if you have paint & materials left over from any big contracts – I delivered 2 community murals when a client’s contract delay meant that the materials were ‘out of use by date’ & I got a call (in June) “Its Christmas, & we need to clear this material out of the store”….
Really sad I couldn’t get to conference, but keen to look at getting free pedicab service to ferry people from bus/rail station to key places in the centre of York, with human scale transport, and creating local work for riders (who also provide a great visitor information service)
With branding of the pedicabs there’s also a funding source for sponsors to support the costs (PS the cargo bikes used during working hours can also be used at night to get folk to & from restaurants, and events…. – or from York races to trains & buses?)
